Canada Will Never Be the 51st State: A Call to Protect Our Sovereignty

The Boycott of U.S. Goods: A Response to Threats Against Canada

In recent years, the political climate between Canada and the United States has grown increasingly tense. With Donald Trump openly refusing to rule out the use of force against Canada and entertaining the idea of absorbing our nation into the U.S., Canadians have responded with a clear message: Canada is not for sale, nor will we ever be the 51st state.

One of the strongest tools we have in defending our sovereignty is economic resistance. Across the country, Canadians are making conscious decisions to boycott American goods and services, opting instead to support local businesses and homegrown industries. From choosing Canadian-made products at the grocery store to selecting Canadian alternatives in technology, e-commerce, and service providers, this movement is growing in strength and significance.

Keeping Our Business in Canada: A Duty of Every Canadian

This shift isn’t just about politics—it’s about economic independence. The more we invest in our own industries, the stronger Canada becomes. Every dollar spent in Canada contributes to our economy, creating jobs, supporting entrepreneurs, and fostering innovation within our own borders. On the other hand, funnelling our money into American businesses only strengthens their economy while leaving ours vulnerable.

This is exactly why I made the decision to move my photography website from SmugMug, an American company, to Format, a proudly Canadian platform. It was a deliberate choice, not just as a business owner but as a Canadian who values keeping our talent, creativity, and investments within our own country. It’s a small yet powerful act that reinforces the idea that Canada does not need to rely on the U.S. for success.

The Changing Sentiment Toward Our Former Friends

For decades, Canada and the United States shared what was often considered a strong partnership. However, the political landscape has changed, and so has the Canadian perspective on our southern neighbour.

  • Erosion of Trust: With increasingly aggressive rhetoric from U.S. politicians and a disregard for Canada’s sovereignty, many Canadians now view the U.S. not as a steadfast ally, but as a nation that would willingly exploit or absorb us for its own gain.
  • Economic Protectionism: The U.S. has repeatedly imposed tariffs, restrictions, and policies that prioritize American interests at the expense of Canadian businesses. In response, Canadians are learning to prioritize our own economy.
  • Diverging Values: Canada prides itself on inclusivity, social responsibility, and diplomacy. The U.S., particularly under Trump’s influence, continues to shift toward nationalism, division, and militarization—values that conflict with the very fabric of Canadian identity.
  • Media and Cultural Influence: Even in pop culture, Canadians are seeking alternatives to American entertainment and media, choosing to uplift Canadian filmmakers, authors, artists, and businesses that reflect our values and perspectives.

  • Canada Stands Strong

The movement to separate ourselves from American influence isn’t just a passing phase—it’s a necessary step in ensuring that Canada remains independent, self-sufficient, and proudly Canadian. We don’t need American governance, and we certainly don’t need American interference in our future.

By keeping our business within Canada, supporting local industries, and making conscious consumer choices, we send a powerful message: Canada will never be the 51st state. Our sovereignty is non-negotiable, and we will continue to fight for our nation’s independence in every way we can.
